Wayne A. HÖecherl Photography

Do you remember the first time you saw a tattoo, and what your reaction was?
No, would have been when I was a kid I guess?

Do you have any tattoos yourself?
No.

As a photographer, do you approach shooting a model with body art any differently than a model without tattoos?
No. however I would approach each subject differently from another based on various factors.

Any tips for other photographers, for working with models who have tattoos?
Working with any subject, a solid knowledge of lighting is pretty key for creating a desired mood or effect.

Are tattoos and body modifications a problem in other work that you do? Do you ever have to shoot around tattoos or use cover-up make-up? Do you ever Photo Shop out tattoos?
Not as of yet.

What is it about a particular tattoo or a model with tattoos that you find interesting? Have you ever seen a tattoo, or a person with tattoos and said, "I have to shoot that!"?
I like people that look unique.somtimes tattoos are a part of what makes someone look unique.

As a photographer and visual artist, what defines a good tattoo in your eyes? What design and aesthetic qualities are you looking for?
I think tribal ones are interesting and anything that might be considered cool art, as if it were on paper or canvas.

What would be your advice to someone who wants a great photo that shows their body art to its best advantage?
Great lighting thats appropriate for the tone  or mood you wish to achieve.

What is the biggest difference between shooting editorial work - say for someone like Bob Baxter at Skin & Ink - and working in a studio?
I have done editorial work both in studio and on location. Location editorial is often more challenging because you  generally are not familiar with a location before you arrive and have to make it up as you go. I like that challenge. Some people find it difficult though.

Any tips for taking good photos at tattoo conventions?
I never do that type of photography so I really couldn't say.

What do you think of the growing numbers of celebrities and models who have tattoos?
I think everyone should be able to do to their bodies as they wish. I would just hope that people are getting tattoos for meaningful and not trivial or trendy reasons. for example tribal tattoos they are a cultural and lifetime commitment to meaning and identity.

What tips would you give to the home photographer, tattoo enthusiast or tattoo artist who wants to take a great photograph of a tattoo?
Lighting, lighting, lighting. Think about it and work with it and you can make magic!!!

What would be your dream tattoo photography assignment?
Shoot guitar players with tattoos to continue my ongoing series on guitar players.
